Dear Mr. Buffett,

Berkshire Hathaway's shareholders request that as a good businessman and known philanthropist, you take action on PacifiCorp's Klamath dams.  PacifiCorp, a subsidiary of Mid-American Energy and Berkshire Hathaway, is risking shareholder investments by ignoring the economics of dam removal on the Klamath River.

Studies performed by the California Energy Commission, a panel of expert economists appointed by the Governor, indicate that shareholders will end up absorbing $415 million in costs to re-license these aging dams.  Economic studies, performed with PacifiCorp's own data, show that decommissioning the dams and buying replacement power will be $36 to $289 million cheaper than engineering the costly upgrades needed to meet modern fish passage standards.  It is likely that state Public Utilities Commissions will not deem the excessive costs of dam re-licensing "reasonable and prudent," which means costs will not be recoverable through ratepayers, and will instead be footed by shareholders.

Opposed by struggling commercial fishermen up and down the coast, California's three largest Native Tribes, and numerous environmental groups, these dams have become a costly liability we can't afford to keep.  Removing them is a wise financial decision for PacifiCorp, and a tremendous opportunity for river restoration on the Klamath.  Let's save money and salmon.
