Native Tribes

Why do Native Tribes support dam removal?

The Klamath is home to four Native Tribes, the Karuk, Yurok, and Hoopa in California, and the Klamath Tribes of Oregon. Like Tribes throughout the Pacific Northwest, Klamath Native people depend on salmon culturally, nutritionally, and economically. Allowed to catch only a fraction of the fish needed to support their people, Native fishermen worry that a loss of salmon on the Klamath will have devastating repercussions on their culture.

Tribal members are fighting for their ancestral fishing rights, and travelled to Scotland when PacifiCorp was owned by Scottish Power. Now that Mid-American Energy and Berkshire Hathaway control the Klamath, Tribal members travel to Omaha to demand dam removal from Warren Buffett and Berkshire shareholders. "Mid-American Energy kills salmon, communities, and profits," said Leaf Hillman, Vice-Chair of the Karuk Tribe. Back to homepage.
