How will we replace the energy the dams provide?
The Klamath dams targeted for removal provide 160 mW of power, less than 1% of PacifiCorp's total capacity. The California Energy Commission noted that replacing the dams with a wind farm would cost the same or less as upgrading the dams.
Shouldn't we be keeping "green" hydropower?
The stagnant mats of toxic algae in PacifiCorp's reservoirs emit high levels of greenhouse gases. Scientists estimate that up to 1/8 of the carbon emissions displaced by the dams are regained by the reservoir's methane emissions. When you factor in dwindling salmon runs, public health warnings from toxic algae, and fish-killing diseases, it's clear these dams are not "green" and should be replaced with truly renewable wind or solar power.
